Cyber Fraud – Key Preventative Measures

Escaping cyber fraud involves a combination of strong personal cyber hygiene, constant vigilance against social engineering tactics, and knowing the correct steps to take if an incident occurs.

Key Preventative Measures

  • Secure your accounts: Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts, combining letters, numbers, and special characters. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible to add an extra layer of security.
  • Be wary of unsolicited contact: Be skeptical of unexpected calls, emails, or messages, even if they appear to be from a legitimate source like your bank or a government agency. Legitimate institutions will never ask for sensitive information like your password, PIN, or OTP over the phone or email.
  • Avoid suspicious links and downloads: Never click on links or download attachments from unknown sources. Be especially cautious of offers that seem “too good to be true,” as these are common lures for online shopping or lottery scams.
  • Use secure networks and devices: Avoid conducting financial transactions or accessing sensitive information over public Wi-Fi networks. Use a secure, private connection, and ensure your devices have updated antivirus software, operating systems, and browsers.
  • Verify contact information: If you receive a suspicious request for information, hang up or close the message and contact the organization directly using a verified number from their official website or the back of your card, not from the potentially fraudulent message itself.
  • Monitor financial activity: Regularly review your bank statements and credit reports for any unauthorized transactions. Set up account alerts to receive notifications of unusual activity.

If You Become a Victim of Cyber Fraud

If you believe you have been a victim of cyber fraud, act immediately to minimize losses:

  1. Contact your bank immediately: Report any suspicious transactions to your bank or financial institution so they can block your account/card and prevent further loss.
  2. Report the incident to the authorities: File a detailed complaint with the appropriate government body.
    • In India, report the incident immediately to the National Cyber Crime Helpline by dialing 1930 or online via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  3. Change passwords: Change passwords on all accounts that might have been compromised.

Staying informed about the latest scam tactics and exercising caution are your best defenses against cyber fraud.
